![]() ![]() And that’s been a busy and rewarding time for the band and its fans alike. Some of these song-splinters are up there with their best work from the last two or three years. Well, there’s enough to like here to get this one over the line. 7 Skies H3, more commonly known as The 24 Hour Song Skull is a song that details this exactly. That strange bleat of a voice from Wayne Coyne, textural guitar circles – the big crash of drums, the finest music from the Pink Floyd era of 1968-1972 seemingly the forever touchstone for the Lips, as they continue to celebrate and rework that, constantly reshaping their sound and turning out intriguing work. I like trying to keep up with them, checking out what they’re doing – and I also think that some of the pieces here (such as 7 Skies H3 – Main Theme and the closing Can’t Let It Go) are full of that wide-eyed, mercurial magic. ![]() Is this anything that you actually need? Well it depends on your level of Lips fandom. Separated out as distinct tracks we get some aural loveliness (Meepy Morp) and some abrasiveness (Battling Voices From Beyond) and songs-within-the-song (In A Dream) as well as some gentleness (Requiem) in a calm-before-the-storm kind of way. Sure there are moments where it all turns to frenzy (Riot In My Brain!!) but for the most part this is a gentle, intriguing roll through sonic fields – all pretty standard actually, in the world of the Flaming Lips. There’s not enough time left in the world for me to listen to that 24-hour version – and nowhere near enough money in my bank account for me to have even been in consideration for one of the special releases – but I can stretch to another new Flaming Lips album/EP.Īnd any fears of a white-noise white-out are removed as 7 Skies (this version of it) settles into a loping wave of psychedelic pop. It could be a full-time gig just reviewing releases from The Flaming Lips EPs, special editions, one-offs, collaborations with their famous and freaky fwends and none of this should detract from the fact that the band is in a purple patch, for even if the odd bit of folly slips through the Lips have been making some great music and. So here’s the condensed one-album/50-minute/10-track version of a composition that originally created as a 24-hour long piece on a special edition EP called 24 Hour Song Skull. Is it too much to keep up with? Absolutely – but good on them for pleasing themselves and then their rabid fan-base (in that order). It could be a full-time gig just reviewing releases from The Flaming Lips – EPs, special editions, one-offs, collaborations with their famous and freaky “fwends” – and none of this should detract from the fact that the band is in a purple patch, for even if the odd bit of folly slips through the Lips have been making some great music – and then not only some great music but actually a lot of great music. ![]()
